National Chess Finals
12/04/2008
(National Competition, UK Finals)
Knocknamuckley travelled to Stratkelvin Battalion in Scotland for the UK National Chess Finals. The other companies competing in the finals were 32nd Nottingham and 3rd Kilsyth and three time national champions 1st Newtonhill.
The draw paired Knocknamuckley against Kilsyth, and Nottingham against Newtonhill in the semi finals.
v 3rd Kilsyth
(UK Semi Final)
The first round of matches went strongly in Knocknamuckley’s favour, as they took all three games, with Andrew Calvert, Stephen Russell and Neill Adamson all claiming wins. This strong start meant that two more wins in the remaining six games would give them the victory.
1st Round 1st Knocknamuckley 3 v 0 3rd Kilsyth
Stephen Russell and Andy Calvert won their second game of the finals, which was enough to wrap up a quick victory for the Irish representatives. Meanwhile, Neill Adamson’s game finished in a stalemate.
2nd Round 1st Knocknamuckley 5 v 0 3rd Kilsyth
In the final set of games Stephen Russell lost his first game of the match, Neill Adamson won and Andy Calvert completed an impressive third victory out of three.
Final Result 1st Knocknamuckley 7 v 1 3rd Kilsyth
This victory meant that they would now compete in the Final of the National Competition, with the chance of being named as the best Chess team in the whole of the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The other semi final finished 32nd Nottingham 2 v 6 1st Newtonhill.
In the 3rd/4th Placed play-off 32nd Nottingham beat 3rd Kilsyth 6-3.
v 1st Newtonhill
(UK Final)
After a long year, Knocknamuckley now faced three time National Chess Champions 1st Newtonhill from Scotland in the biggest and most important chess match of the year.
Unfortunately Muckley got off to the worst possible start as Stephen Russell, Andrew Calvert and Neill Adamson all lost their opening games, leaving them in the complete opposite situation from the semi final, and giving them a huge task in the remaining rounds of games.
1st Round 1st Knocknamuckley 0 v 3 1st Newtonhill
In the second round of games Neill Adamson played well for a stalemate, but unfortunately Stephen Russell and Andrew Calvert were unable to match their opponents, giving Newtonhill an unassailable lead.
2nd Round 1st Knocknamuckley 0 v 5 1st Newtonhill
Once again, Stephen Russell and Andrew Calvert lost out to their two very skilful opponents, but Neill Adamson rounded off a commendable performance in the final with Muckley’s only victory in the showpiece.
Final Result 1st Knocknamuckley 1 v 7 1st Newtonhill
1st Newtonhill were deservedly crowned UK Champions for the fourth time, but despite losing out in the final, this was a wonderful season from the Knocknamuckley side, finishing the year as Irish Champions and UK Runners-Up. A lot of credit must go to the team of Russell, Calvert and Adamson, as well as their coach Malcolm Adamson, who have done their company proud not only locally but nationally. Congratulations.
Team: N.Adamson, Calvert, Russell.
