Volleyball v 3rd Lisburn
10/03/2008
(Friendly)

Knocknamuckley hosted 3rd Lisburn in a friendly in preparation for their Northern Ireland semi final clash against Portrush later in the month. 3rd Lisburn, despite not having competed in this seasons NI Cup had won all of their games in the Belfast Battalion volleyball competition.

The first set was a very tight affair, and there was never more than a couple of points between the two sides. The two teams were still all square at 20 points each, before Lisburn finally put daylight between the them and their opponents to lead 24-21. Muckley managed to claw back the next two points, before Lisburn closed out the opening set.

First Set 1st Knocknamuckley 23 v 25 3rd Lisburn

On this occasion Knocknamuckley opened up an early 5 point lead, and this gap was more or less maintained. Knocknamuckley stretched their advantage slightly, with some excellent play from Seth Mathers, and they eventually took the set 25-15.

Second Set 1st Knocknamuckley 25 v 15 3rd Lisburn

The third set started off close, Lisburn holding a slender advantage, before two brilliant consecutive blocks from Simon Grey helped Knocknamuckley to string some points together. This helped them to open up an 16-11 lead, and they didn't let this slip away as they took the third set.

Third Set  1st Knocknamuckley 25 v 17 3rd Lisburn

After a number of substitutions and some dreadful play by Knocknamuckley at the beginning of the fourth set , saw Lisburn lead by a massive margin of 17-6. However, this managed to ignite some of Knocknamuckley's best play of the game as they won 15 of the next 20 points to trail 21-22. Knocknamuckley served for the match at 24-23, but Lisburn took the next two points to have a set point of their own. This pattern continued, until Knocknamuckley finally took advantage of their match point at 28-27, to take the match.

Fourth Set  1st Knocknamuckley 29 v 27 3rd Lisburn

This was a good win from the Knocknamuckley team with some good performances from the players, including Simon Grey, who played very consistently throughout. They now await the draw for the semi-finals, to see who stands between them and a place in the final.

Result 1st Knocknamuckley 3 v 1 3rd Lisburn

Team:  N.Adamson, Carville, Cowan, Grey, Harrison, Henderson, A.Irwin, C.Irwin, Mathers, McKeown, Russell.
