Chess v 58th Belfast
25/02/2008
(National Competition, Irish Final)

Knocknamuckley were drawn at away from home in the Irish Final of the national chess competition against 58th Belfast. 58th Belfast were the holders of the title, with Knocknamuckley having won the competition the two years previous to that, making this a very intriguing tie.

In the first round of matches the first victory went to the Belfast company, when Stephen Russell lost his opener. Andrew Calvert and Neill Adamson both managed victories to give Knocknamuckley the lead after the first set of games.

In the second set of games Stephen Russell bounced back with a win, and Andy Calvert again defeated his opponent. Unusually, Neill Adamson's game finished in a stalemate.

2nd Round 1st Knocknamuckley 4 v 1 58th Belfast

Knocknamuckley held a three point lead going into the final set of matches, this meant that Belfast were still able to draw the match level on points, but because of the deciding criteria in the event of a tie, if the match had of finished at 4-4 Knocknamuckley would have still been crowned as champions. As the result of the final had now been decided, speed chess was played in the final three games. Stephen Russell and Neil Adamson both won their games, while Andy Calvert made it a clean sweep of victories in his three games, to give Knocknamuckley a convincing 7-1 win.

Final Result 1st Knocknamuckley 7 v 1 58th Belfast

After this fine result, and being crowned Irish Champions, for the third time in four years, Knocknamuckley will now travel to the mainland in order to compete in the UK Finals. Every congratulation must go to the three boys on their performance throughout the tournament, and indeed for a great display in the final, as well as Malcolm Adamson for all the hard work and coaching that he has put in to this side, who are now the best in Ireland.

Team: N.Adamson, Calvert, Russell.
