Northern Ireland U-15 Rugby Sevens
02/05/2009

On yet another beautiful sunny Saturday that the Lord had made, a team of 7 players arrived at the hall ready to take on the 7’s rugby tournament at Omagh.  Budgie used his infinite contacts and management skills to haul Josh Black out of his beauty sleep, a move that proved to be divine (but not pretty that early).

The Under 15’s included three leagues of 4, and the top teams passing through along with the second placed side with the highest points; the challenge was mighty.  Johnny got the boys warmed up with a bit of ball wrestling.

v Magherafelt

As the Muckley men started their first match against Magherafelt undeterred by the challenge, the pace was horrendous.  Nicholas Lennon stole the opposition ball in some close interplay and passed to Josh.  As he broke through two tackles, the seas opened and he showed a clean pair of heals to the try line.  Peter Stewart missed the extras.  Thomas Chambers stopped a promising retaliation stone dead with an amazing tackle, Iain Irwin was on hand to float a perfectly waited pass to Peter.  Peter drove 10yds through the heart of the defence before popping to Josh.  Josh sprung off like a jack-rabbit and ran half the pitch before scoring under the uprights.  Joe Lavery continued to tackle everything that moved and with the final whistle sounding the boys sighed a job well done, a 10-5 win the outcome.

v Portglenone

The second match against Portglenone was a closely fought contest with the Muckley boys striking the first blow.  The mighty Neill "Noker" Adamson caught ball and trundled forward finally hauled down by three players.  Peter was on hand to pass to Chambers, before popping to Nicky at speed.  Captain Nicky broke the initial tackles and popped to Budgie's ace card, Josh.  Josh outpaced the winger and scored under the posts again.  Unfortunately having never seen an oval ball before, he missed the conversion..  The closely fought lineouts ended two a piece.  Thomas "GT" Adamson who was ever sniping around the scrums made good yardage and in the ensuing ruck was turned over.  Quick ball by the opposition left only Chambers to hold the fort.  At half the size, he was brushed off and Portglenone scored the closing try.  The score ended 10-5 to the opposition a loss that could have been avoided.

v Ballymena

Ballymena proved to be our final match and the winner of the group.  Ballymena kicked off and Iain claimed and caught the ball cleanly and ran into the opposition midfield to form a maul.  Noker and Nicky added their weight and drove it forward.  Ballymena managed to slip the ball and against the run of play snipped under the posts for an opportunist try.  Once again Muckley rallied the troops with Iain Irwin defending the line with valour.  With the only minor injury of the day, Joe sprained his thumb and allowed Chambers to join the fray.  Immediately making impact in the attack Muckley pressed forward.  Once again a loss in the ruck forced them back onto their line with everyone defending the constant bombardment.  Eventually a mismatch on the wing saw another try conceded.  This proved the final play and the 12 minutes of sheer determination proved in vain.

Knocknamuckley 0 v 12 Ballymena

The Coaching staff of Budgie, Pieman and Johnny Gough would like to thank the boys for their dogged determination and sportsman like attitude, with only one change forced for next year, and a little training in the black art of the oval ball, hopes are high.

Team: Lennon, N.Adamson, T.Adamson, Black, Chambers, I.Irwin, Lavery, Stewart.
