Badminton v 4th Newtonabbey
23/03/2009
(Northern Ireland Cup, Semi Final)

Having achieved their first ever badminton victory in the previous round, Knocknamuckley away to 4th Newtonabbey for a Northern Ireland Cup semi final, which was previously unchartered territory. The side was unchanged from that which played in the victory over Ahorey. Four singles matches were to be played, followed by two doubles games.

Match 1
Dundee  v Kimmons

Matthew Kimmons came up against Ueu Dundee in the first match. Dundee took the first set 21-6, and Kimmons was just unable to match him in the second as he sealed the match with a 21-10 win.

Match 2
Abernethy v Harrison

Gregg Harrison was involved in the next match, taking on Andrew Abernethy. Abernethy swept comfortably to the first set, 21-5, and despite a better performance in the second set, Abernethy won the set by 21 points to 12.

Match 3
White v Poole

With Newtonabbey having established a 2-0 lead, the third game was vital for Muckley if they were to harbour any hope of clawing the tie back in their favour. Andrew Poole played well, but Andrew White was too strong for him, taking the first set 21-10, and winning the second by the same margin.

Match 4
McCann v I.Irwin

Knocknamuckley were now faced with the proposition of having to win their remaining three matches to be in with any shot of winning this tie. Ian Irwin put up a commendable fight in the first set, but was unlucky to loose out by 21-15 to Regan McCann. Knocknamuckley’s hopes then disappeared in the second set as McCann seemed to find another few gears to win convincingly, 21-4.

Match 5
Abernethy & Dundee v Harrison & Kimmons

With the match having already been decided, it was time for the doubles matches.

Muckley pair  Kimmons and Harrison from came up against Abernethy and Dundee. Unfortunately the pattern of the match continued with a resounding Newtonabbey victory, 21-5, and 21-6.

Match 5 4th Newtonabbey 5 v 0 1st Knocknamuckley

Match 6
McCann & White v I.Irwin & Poole

Knocknamuckley pair Ian Irwin and Andrew Poole took on Ian Irwin and Andrew Poole took on Regan McCann and Andrew White from Newtonabbey. The first set was again a one sided affair, with Newtonabbey taking it 21-5.

With Knocknamuckley facing a white wash, not only in matches, but in sets as well, the two young Muckley players put in a determined performance, and were unlucky to lose the second set 21-16.


Result
4th Newtonabbey 6 v 0 1st Knocknamuckley

Newtonabbey progressed to the final with a rather convincing win, and will provide stern opposition for whoever meets them. Despite the final scoreline the badminton team from Knocknamuckley should still bee proud having made a tiny bit of history in reaching the semi final.
