Volleyball v 1st Ahorey
19/04/2008
(Northern Ireland Cup, Final)

Knocknamuckley once again lifted the Northern Ireland Volleyball Cup as they continued the companies fine tradition in this sport. Knocknamuckley having won this competition a number of times before, and also previously winning the, sadly now defunct, UK title a number of years ago.

Knocknamuckley won the important first set to get them of to a good start and ensure that they wouldn't be left playing catch-up.

Ahorey bounced back strongly and took the second set to leave the scores level at one set each. Ahorey continued where they left off in the previous set and their momentum won them the third set also, leaving them on the brink of winning the Northern Ireland Trophy, needing one of the final two sets.

Knocknamuckley dug deep in the fourth set, and managed to stem Ahorey's winning streak and take the game to a deciding set.

The decider, which is played to 15 points, was neck and neck throughout. At 13-13 Knocknamuckley won the point, leaving them only one match point. Fortunately for the home side, this was all they needed as Christopher Carville struck the winning spike to give the trophy to Knocknamuckley.

This was a thrilling final, which was tight throughout. Both Graham Cowan and Seth Mathers set and defended serves well, giving Muckley a platform to attack, and Carville spiked and blocked excellently throughout.

Andrew Irwin, who was named as captain in his final game for the side, was presented with the Northern Ireland Cup.

Knocknamuckley only had one match point in a nail biting finish, and it was Christopher Carville who hit the winning shot, to give the trophy to Knocknamuckley.
