U-18 Battalion 5-a-side

U-18 Battalion 5-a-side Tournament
10/11/2007

The Battalion 5-a-side again competition took place in Dungannon and was played on an artificial grass surface in a large hall

The tournament was organised into two groups of four teams, with the top two in each progressing to the semi-finals.

v 5th Portadown

Knocknamuckley began with a tough game against Tatarahagn. This was a very toughly contested match, with some strong tackles from both sides. Tatarahagn came closest to opening the scoring with a well struck shot, but Seth Mathers did well to get down low lo his left to make the save. They were then presented with a golden chance to go one up, when Johnny Mawhinney inadvertently wandered into his own penalty box, and a penalty kick was awarded. The penalty was taken, and failed to hit the target as it went wide of the left hand post. Tatarahagn did finally take the lead when they had a shot from the left, which despite hitting Mathers legs still found its way into the net. Knocknamuckley did have chances to equalise through Simon Grey and Gregg Harrison, but the match finished 1-0.

v 7th Portadown

Having lost their opening match Knocknamuckley knew that they couldn't afford another defeat, and that two wins were required if they were definitely going to progress. The Methodist team had the first chance when Mathers rolled the ball straight to a Portadown player, but the striker missed when presented with this sitter. After this let off Mathers made an excellent save low to his left to keep the Portadown out. Knocknamuckley took the lead following a Stuart Campbell run down the left. The ball inside found Gregg Harrison who thumped the ball into the net. Harrison and John Henderson had further shots on target but Muckley were unable to extend their lead. The Methodist did get on the scoresheet when a Portadown shot came off the back wall and hit Muckley keeper, Mathers, on the back of the legs, and trickled into the goal. This fluke earned Portadown a share of the spoils in a game Knocknamuckley probably deserved to win.

v Milltown

After a defeat and a draw in their opening to matches, a win was essential in this final group for Knocknamuckley. Muckley started well with a John Henderson shot after great work from Johnny Mawhinney, followed by a Gregg Harrison pass. Muckley then took the lead through a Harrison goal. Mawhinney had a chance to extend the lead, and other chances fell Knocknamuckley's way without any further goals.

This result meant that in the last group game between 5th Portadown and 7th Portadown only a one goal win for 7th Portadown would not send Knocknamuckley through, and would actually leave three teams tied on points and goal difference. A 2-0 win for 5th Portadown prevented this and sent Knocknamuckley through as runners-up.

Semi Final
v Charlemont

In the semi final Muckley met Charlemont who had won all of their three group games. Knocknamuckley had the first chance when Gregg Harrison had a shot after Simon Grey had carried the ball out of defence and found him with a through ball. Charlemont then looked to have taken the lead when their forward rifled a shot which looked to be heading for the top corner only for Seth Mathers to react brilliantly to get a hand to it. Knocknamuckley went 1-0 up when a Harrison pass found John Henderson on the right side of the box, and Hendo finished well with a left foot shot. Muckley made sure of the win when a Grey slotted the ball past the keeper from a Henderson square ball.

FINAL
v 5th Portadown

The final saw Knocknamuckley take on 5th Portadown, in what was a repeat of the very first game of the tournament. Portadown had seen off Ahorey in the other semi courtesy of a penalty shoot-out.

Tatarahagn took an early lead when a cross-field ball from the left to the right was met on the volley by an advancing Portadown player, and he made no mistake rifling it into the bottom corner for a great goal. They quickly took a two goal lead when the same player scored from a similar position with another good finish. Seth Mathers managed to keep Tatarahagn within sight when he tipped a shot onto the crossbar. Muckley weren't creating many chances but still managed to get into the game when Gregg Harrison had a long range effort which beat the keeper all ends up and hit off the underside of the bar for a wonder goal.

Half Time: Knocknamuckley 1 v 2 5th Portadown

The goal before half time left Knocknamuckley in with a chance of pulling of a great come back, and eventually they were level thanks to Simon Grey, who finished well, after a Harrison pass had slipped him through. Mathers kept the scores level when he blocked a powerful shot at his near post. With time running out the game was going to extra time if the scores remained the same. However, there was no need for extra time when Harrison picked up the ball in the middle of the pitch, he was quickly closed down, but produced a lovely shimmy to lose both of the defenders and scored with a left foot shot to give Muckley the lead after being 2-0 down.

The side improved from game to game, and showed great determination. In the final they refused to give up despite having a mountain to climb, like all good Muckley sides should, and it paid off in the end with a great tournament victory. It was made all the more impressive by the fact that the whole side had been awake for most of the previous night at the BB “Through the Night” fundraiser.

The team were presented with their medals and the trophy was presented to Knocknamuckley captain Gregg Harrison.

Team- Mathers, Grey, Harrison, Mawhinney, Campbell, Henderson.
