U-14 v 4th Portadown (7-a-side)

U-14 v 4th Portadown
(7-a-side, League Stage)
02/09/2007

Knocknamuckley kicked off their new season with a tough match against 4th Portadown in the 7-a-side competition. The U-14's lost a lot of players from last season, with a large number of their squad moving up to U-18 level. In their first match of this season's 7-a-side, only two of the ten had featured regularly last year, and included five recruits. This made their start to this years competition all the more impressive.

Within the first couple of minutes of play Knocknamuckley took the lead when John Uprichard scored the opener, on his début, with a shot into the top corner.

Portadown pulled the game back to 1-1. The Presby forward found himself clean through, with only the keeper to beat and his shot went through the hands of Muckley goalie Peter Stewart, for what was an uncharacteristic mistake from the goalkeeper.

Knocknamuckley did regain the lead, thanks to another goal from a recruit making his début. Ian Irwin had a speculative shot from near the half way line, which made its way into the goal, past a motionless keeper.

Half time 1st Knocknamuckley 2 v 1 4th Portadown

With little between the two sides after the first half, the first goal was always going to be crucial, Portadown hoping for an equaliser, and Knocknamuckley looking to consolidate their lead.

It was Muckley who got their names on the scoresheet again and increased their lead through another goal from Uprichard. Neil Adamson had a shot at goal which the keeper was unable to hold onto, and like all good strikers Uprichard had followed up Noker's shot to tuck away the rebound.

The scoring was rounded off by Irwin, who also grabbed his second of the match. After a lay off from Thomas Chambers, Irwin had a long range effort which the keeper should have dealt with, but he fluffed his attempted clearance, allowing the ball to roll into the net.

This was a great start to the season from Knocknamuckley, as the scoreline suggests. There were some fine performances, Josh Black looking impressive at the back, and there were chances created in attack, the two youngsters taking their goals well. Particularly impressive was how the new members of the team were able to integrate so quickly and settle into the 7-a-side format, which bodes ell for future games.
