Chess B v 7th Portadown
09/02/2009
(National Competition, Irish Semi Final)

For the first time Knocknamuckley entered two teams into the National Chess Competition. The Knocknamuckley B team played their first ever match at the semi final stage, where they made the short journey to 7th Portadown. With Knocknamuckley's A and B team having been drawn in opposite semi finals, the exciting possibility of having an all Muckley final was very much a possibility, although 7th Portadown would have other ideas after having lost out to Knocknamuckley at this stage of the competition last year.

Thomas Adamson won his first game, while Phillip Adamson and Chris Carville, who were both playing their first BB chess match had mixed fortunes. Phil lost in a close contest, while Carville won, edging out his opponent, giving Knocknamuckley the edge after the first set of games.

1st Round 7th Portadown 1 v 2 1st Knocknamuckley

In the second set of games Thomas Adamson won again, while Phillip Adamson and Chris Carville both lost out to their opponents, leaving things all square going into the last set of games.

2nd Round 7th Portadown 3 v 3 1st Knocknamuckley

So the match came right down to the wire, as both teams were neck and neck. Thomas Adamson lost his first game of the evening, when a brief loss of concentration cost “GT” the game. Chris Carville managed to out manoeuvre his opponent, in what was, overall, a fine début. Unfortunately, from a Muckley point of view, Phillip Adamson lost out in another close contest.

Final Result 7th Portadown 5 v 4 1st Knocknamuckley

7th Portadown won this local derby the smallest of margins, and will now await the winner of the other semi final, which may well see them paired against another Knocknamuckley side.

Team: P.Adamson, T.Adamson, Carville.
