Table Tennis v 1st Portrush
17/04/2009
(National Competition, Irish Final)
Knocknamuckley took on 1st Portrush in the Irish Final of the National competition in an attempt to defend their title as Irish Champions.
Knocknamuckley were forced into a change, with Matthew Kimmons coming in for Gregg Harrison, who was unavailable.
Knocknamuckley got off to the worst possible start, as Matthew Kimmons, Andrew Poole and Stephen Russell all lost their opening games, as Portrush took control of the match early on. Kimmons lost his game 3-0, Pooley lost 3-1 and Russell went down 3-2, leaving Muckley with an uphill task in the remaining games.
1st Round 1st Knocknamuckley 0 v 3 1st Portrush
Unfortunately, things didn’t improve for Muckley in the second set of games. With Matthew Kimmons being beaten 3-0, it was now necessary for Knocknamuckley to win their remaining 5 games, but the match was sewn up there and then with Andrew Poole and Stephen Russell both being beaten by 3 sets to 1.
2nd Round 1st Knocknamuckley 0 v 6 1st Portrush
Knocknamuckley now trailed by the largest possible margin and had relinquished their grasp on the Irish Trophy. In the final set of matches Matthew Kimmons lost 3-0, but Andrew Poole and Stephen Russell were at least able to give Knocknamuckley some shred of consolation with two wins, both 3-1
