Portadown Battalion Cross Country
16/02/2008

The annual Portadown Battalion Cross Country took place on Saturday morning. This is a competition which Knocknamuckley have a very proud tradition in, having won the competition on many occasions. With the recent dry weather the course was relatively dry, making the ground easier to run on.

The competition is split into three races; the Junior Race for boys aged 13 and under, the Intermediate Race for boys aged 15 and under, and the Senior Race for boys aged 18 and under. The first two boys who finish for each company in each race score for their company, and the company with the lowest score, with a minimum of two boys finishing in every race wins.

Junior Race

The Junior race took place first, with Knocknamuckley having two boys competing. A good run from Ian Irwin saw him come in in second place, while Neill Adamson gave his all, finishing in 31st position.

Intermediate Race

The Intermediate Race saw no boys from Knocknamuckley take part. For a company the size of Muckley, it is hugely disappointing that no boys in this age group could be bothered to turn up and show a bit of pride in their company and compete, and is even more disappointing for the boys, in other races, who did make the effort but were denied the opportunity of winning the competition due to the laziness of others.

Senior Race

The Senior Race was much more pleasing, and appropriate for the Knocknamuckley, as the Muckley boys packed the field, finishing with four in the top five. Colin Irwin came in at 9th and Seth Mathers finished 6th. Adam McKeown and Stephen Russell finished in joint 4th. James Moneypenny ran well for his 3rd place finish, while Kris Duprey ran a great race to comfortably win the three lap race.

Congratulations must go to those who turned up. All of the boys ran well, and gave their all, and almost certainly would have won had only two boys turned up for the Intermediate Race. However, the boys who did compete each did themselves and their officers proud.

Team- N.Adamson, Duprey, C.Irwin, I.Irwin, Mathers, McKeown, Moneypenny, Russell.

Winner 1st Bluestone
