Camp Volleyball v 1st Portrush
05/07/2009
(Friendly)
1st Knocknamuckley met 1st Portrush in a repeat of the Northern Ireland Cup. The only differences were that the crowd provided a carnival atmosphere, the court was smaller and the match was played in a field (no, not the beach).
Muckley took an early lead but were soon pegged back to 6-6. Simon Grey’s presence at the net and great serving from Chris Carville allowed Muckley to impose a 15-7 lead. Portrush pegged the lead back to 18-17 as mistakes began to dominate the game. This occurred to such an extent that Gregg Harrison actually missed a serve for the first time in his life...ever!! Mukley managed to take the next 6 points, as Matthew Kimmons defied gravity to hit two great spikes, and after the ball had been recovered from Colly Iriwn’s sleeping bag in Boy’s Tent One, Muckley wrapped up the set.
First Set 1st Knocknamuckley 25 v 18 1st Portrush
Portrush improved at the start of the second and took a 7-2 lead. This was pegged back by the serving of Seth Mathers, although the momentum was halted when Wrighty, I mean Kimmons, decided to duck out of the way of the ball.
The match was interrupted when a small scuffle broke out between Simon Grey and a spectator, later identified as Isobel McKane (a known trouble maker). When play resumed Grey was obviously shaken, as he scuffed his serve.
As Muckley took control Seth Mathers appeared to have shed blood for the cause, although this was later dismissed as a knick which had occurred while shaving his legs for a National Trust postcard competition.
Second Set 1st Knocknamuckley 25 v 18 1st Portrush
At the beginning of the third set vice-captain Mothers was replace by up and coming star Thomas Chambers, while Adam McKeown vacated his place on the replacements bench to take a private call. It is believed that he needed to get directions, as he was unable to find his way out from under the thumb.
Chris Carville moved in an attempt to win a point, but despite this Portrush took an 18-13 lead as their subs proved the difference, before taking the game into a fourth set.
Third Set 1st Knocknamuckley 22 v 25 1st Portrush
The entertainment at the second half was provided by Chambers chasing a rabid dog across the court. Pie Man was later spotted trying to save the “DOGGIE” as Chambers was already showing signs of rabies.
As the reporter lost interest Knocknamuckley took the set, probably thanks to Captain Jimmy C, and with it the match.
Fourth Set 1st Knocknamuckley 25 v 23 1st Portrush
Result 1st Knocknamuckley 3 v 1 1st Portrush
Team: Cowan (c), Carville, Chambers, Grey, Harrison, Kimmons, Mathers.
