Badminton v 1st Ballymoney

(National Competition, 1st Round)
Knocknamuckley were drawn at home to 1st Ballymoney in the first round of the National Badminton Competition. Badminton hasn't been Knocknamuckley's strongest sport in recent years, and the current side were hoping to progress and gain the company's first win in this sport. The match contains six seperate doubles matches. The matches are best out of three sets, with a set being played up to 21 points.
Match 1
Cowan & Poole v Dunlop & N.Irwin
Graham Cowan and Andrew Poole were paired together first for Knocknamuckley, and faced Niall Irwin and Aaron Dunlop from Ballymoney. It was Irwin and Dunlop who got off to the better start, and took the first set 21-11. In the second set Cowan and Poole played better, but were unable to overcome the Ballymoney pairing who won out 21-15.

Match 2
I.Irwin & Mathers v Beverland & Simpson
Ian Irwin and Seth Mathers were next up for Knocknamuckley, taking on Simon Beverland and Jason Simpson. The first set was evenly contested, but it was the visiting side who managed to close it out, winning 21-17. Again the play in the second set was very even, but this time it was the Muckley pair who triumphed, 21-16, to take the match into a decider. In the deciding set Ballymoney upped their game slightly, while the Knocknamuckley pair seemed to dip slightly, this turned out to be enough to swing the match, as the final set went to Ballymoney, 21-12.

Match 3
Mathers & Poole v N.Irwin & Simpson
The third game saw Mathers and Poole pair up for Muckley, and the match followed a very similar pattern to the previous game. Ballymoney took an even first set, 21-16, and the scores were reversed in the second, as Muckley played the better badminton to take it to a deciding set. The two sides were very evenly matched, and a few close points gave ballymoney their third win of the night as they won 21-17.

Match 4
Cowan & I.Irwin v Beverland & Dunlop
Simon Beverland and Niall Dunlop got off to a flier against graham Cowan and Ian irwin in their match and took the first set 21-10. Cowan and Irwin improved in the second set, but narrowly lost out, 21-17, for Ballymoney tpo win the match, and win the tie overall.

Match 5
Cowan & Mathers v Dunlop & Simpson
Knocknamuckley's two most experienced players were paired together in the next match up, and took on Dunlop and Simpson of Ballymoney. Immediately Cowan and Mathers showed their experience and powered to a 21-14 first set victory. The second set was tighter as neither side gave an inch. The set ended up going right to the wire as Muckley fought to stay in the match and Ballymoney tried to take the game into the thrid set. In the end Ballymoney scraped to the finishing line first, 22-20. The decider went the way of Ballymoney, who won the game 21-14.

Match 6
I.Irwin & Poole v Beverland & N.Irwin
Muckley's youngest two players, Ian Irwin and Andrew Poole, paired up for the final match, and ended up having a great set of badminton against Niall Irwin and Simon Beverland. Both sides matched each other qall the way in a tight set, but it was the young Muckley pairing who eventually won the set, 22-20. The Knocknamuckley side seemed bouyed by winning the first set, and pushed on to win the second set, 21-16, and with it the game.
